Gritting my teeth without meaning to, I think about Ama answering the phone when Breaker calls. They make a horrible squeaking noise, and I stop. I turn back to the truck, fading yellow crusted in blood-colored rust. Breaker watches me with thoughtful eyes. I wave, but he doesn’t wave back. I know that look. That response. He’s not watching me. He’s looking right through me to the past, caught in a memory. At least I won’t poke him in the side with a bamboo skewer to snap him out of it like Ama does to me.

When I go inside, I hear the chortle of the truck driving away.

I take a deep steeling breath. I like hospitals. The uniform predictability of them. The staff shuffling through the hallways with a healing purpose. I nod at a nurse as she passes me, running my hand along the plastic handrail. This is home to me.
